Maths
At Lawn Primary and Nursery School, we intend for our mathematics curriculum to deliver lessons that enable our pupils to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and the ability to solve both worded and multi-step problems. Mathematics is all around us, so we want our pupils to become confident, enthusiastic and positive mathematicians who can apply their skills both in lessons and to real-life situations.
To foster a love of maths and a secure understanding of number, we use the White Rose Scheme of Learning to provide most teaching resources, and supplement this with a range of online sites and activities. Our curriculum is based upon small steps of learning that act as building blocks in children’s knowledge. The coherence in sequences of lessons enables children to notice patterns, forge links and apply rules. Flashback 4 exercises are used daily to revisit and embed prior learning. Numbots and TTRockstars are used for the development of number sense and times tables in Years 1-6.
Our Mastery approach to maths means all children strive to achieve the same objectives, with varying levels of support tailored to their needs. We aim for all children at Lawn to fulfil their mathematical potential and develop a positive and confident attitude towards the subject. Our Do It, Secure It and Deepen It sections in lessons ensure we deliver a balanced curriculum. Learners use manipulatives and visual representations to secure their understanding of a concept before deepening their knowledge through varied, open-ended and challenging questions.
Please find attached our White Rose Maths calculation policies. These detail the methods we use when teaching, and lay out the expectations for each year group.
