  • Starting Nursery

We want your child to feel happy and safe with us. When you accept a place at Lawn Nursery our staff will work with you to decide on how to help your child settle in. You and your child are welcome to come for a 'play and stay' session before their first day at Nursery.

All children are unique individuals, some settle at their first session while other children take longer. Parents should not feel worried if it takes their child a while to settle.

In order to feel free to explore and experiment with all kinds of materials, including messy ones, it is best to send children dressed in clothes which are easily washable and old. We also ask that your child is in sensible, hard-wearing school shoes that are easy for your child to take on and off themselves. We recommend Velcro or slip-on shoes and ask that you avoid laces.

Nursery School has spare clothes available in case of accidents but please provide a spare set of clothes in your child’s bag if you feel that this will make your child feel more comfortable.

As required by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) our children access the outdoors in all weathers, they need suitable outdoor clothing at all times including a named pair of wellies.

Please label all clothing clearly for ease of identification.

Stories to share

We have suggested a range of books that can help to prepare your child for nursery including stories that may help your child to understand their feelings about starting Nursery and spending time away from their home and family.

Stories are a great way of getting our little people to open up about the feelings they have inside. Here are some lovely stories which may help.

I'm 🌟 Starting Nursery 👶 Helping Children Start Nursery (Big Steps)

The Big Steps series is designed to help little ones (and their parents) cope with everyday experiences. In I'm Starting Nursery, Ben is sad after Daddy drops him at nursery for the first time. But not for long... he soon makes friends and finds lots of things to do and in no time at all, Daddy is back!

My First Day at Nursery School | Kids Book READ ALOUD!

"I want my Mommmy!" yells the kid...but somewhere along the way, nursery school gets REAL AWESOME. A back-to-school KidTime StoryTime that'll make you want to attend THIS school...! Writer Becky Edwards lives in a town in southeastern England called Chichester & this is her 3rd book!

Today's storytime is Owl Babies by Martin Waddell and Patrick Benson. Kids will love listening to this heart warming story read aloud with pictures. After the story there is a comprehension question and phonics practise to help with reading and spelling.

Storytime # 37 The Kissing Hand

written by: Audrey Penn illustrations by: Ruth Harper & Nancy Leak music: Silence Theme (InShot Classic) video editing app: InShot FOREWORD: The Kissing Hand is a story for any child who confronts a difficult situation, and for a child within each of us who sometimes needs reassurance.....
