  • Mental Health and Wellbeing

We know that life can be really challenging for both children and adults and that sometimes this can affect our wellbeing and mental health. At Lawn Primary and Nursery School we firmly believe that being mentally healthy is vital for us to cope with day-to-day life and that wellbeing needs to be a high priority in order for children to be ready for learning. On this page we will be sharing ideas about how to support your own and your child's wellbeing and mental health.

What is Mental Health

We all have mental health. Mental health is about our feelings, our thinking, our emotions and our moods. Looking after our mental health is important. We all have ‘small’ feelings every day. These sometimes feel strong and overwhelming, whether happy or sad, but they go away before too long. Sometimes we experience ‘big’ feelings: These feel strong and overwhelming for a long time. They stop us doing what we want to in our lives. You could watch the video below to help think about these feelings.

Senior Mental Health Lead

The school's Senior Mental Health Lead is Miss Jelley. At Lawn, the SMHL sits on the Mental Health and Well-being Team in order to work with other members of our Nurture Team to oversee, plan and implement a school-wide strategy to support mental health.

Mental Health and Well-being Team

The school's Mental Health and Well-being Team comprises of the following people - Miss Jelley, Mr Berry, Mrs Cannon and Mrs Sanghera. As a team, we meet regularly to look not only look at the mental health strategy but also at well-being across the school. We have an action plan that we review at each meeting to evaluate what we are doing and what more we can do to improve the mental health and well-being of all of our school community.

  • Supporting your child when they don't want to go to school Sometimes we find that children can become resistant about attending school for all sorts of reasons. When we don't address athis and suppor them, this can escalate into a bigger problem. Have a look at these parenting tips for supporting your child if they are reluctant to attend.

In school we teach all the children to think about the Zones of Regulation. We tell them that we all have days or times when we feel blue, red or yellow. We also teach them things to do and ways to cope, in order that they may soon feel green again.
