Special Educational Needs

Ofsted (21 Feb 2023)

Leaders make sure that pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) learn alongside their classmates. Leaders work effectively with staff, parents and pupils to set and review targets regularly to support learning. As a result, pupils with SEND develop their knowledge and skills across the curriculum effectively. The school is highly inclusive. Every pupil is valued and well supported to participate fully in all aspects of school life.

At Lawn Primary and Nursery School we believe in the potential of every child and we will work hard to ensure each child makes exceptional progress. We know that at times, many children find some aspect of school more challenging, whether that be academic, socially, emotionally or behaviourally. All staff at our school share a commitment to supporting any child with an additional or special need, be this a short-term problem related to a very small part of the curriculum, school life or more complex needs.

Lawn Primary School and Nursery is a place where the children are at the heart of everything we do. We believe “every interaction is an intervention” and every small step can improve the outcomes achieved.  We aim to provide a great school experience for all children, learning new skills, making friendships and creating memories.

We aim high for all our children and aspire to them reaching their fullest potential and finding their own place in society as they get older. We equip all pupils to become well balanced learners and to grow with each other into a kind and caring society always doing their very best.

We recognise that all children are different and have unique skills, learn in a range of ways and have different opinions. We aim to ensure all children with SEND are exposed to the same learning and opportunities as other children, and aim to make adaptations in order to achieve this. Children with SEND spend as much time as possible in their classes, with their teacher and peers, learning alongside them, experiencing the same lessons and learning experiences.

All pupils at Lawn follow the National Curriculum at a level and pace suitable for them. Our SEND ethos places children with additional needs at the centre of personalised learning and our curriculum is tailored to meet their individual needs.

These needs are described in the SEND Code of Practice:

• Communication and Interaction needs;

This includes children who have speech and language and communication difficulties including autistic spectrum conditions.

• Cognition and Learning needs;

This includes children who have specific learning difficulties like dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia

• Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs;

This includes children who may have behaviour difficulties relating to emotional conditions such as anxiety or depression.

• Sensory and/or Physical needs;

This includes children who have visual or hearing needs, or a physical disability that affects their learning.

Lawn Primary and Nursery School holds the Dyslexia Friendly Schools Award and has since 2010 and was last verified and re-awarded in July 2023.
