Design technology is a practical subject. It prepares children to take part in the development of tomorrow’s rapidly changing world. At Lawn we believe the subject encourages children to become autonomous and creative problem-solvers, both as individuals and as part of a team. Through the study of design and technology we encourage the children to combine practical skills with an understanding of aesthetic, social and environmental issues, as well as functions and industrial practices. Design technology helps all children to become discriminating and informed consumers and potential innovators.
Throughout the school year, each year group studies 2 design technology units. The outcomes of these units are often celebrated throughout the school showing the children’s understanding of technological processes and their manufacturing skills. With the introduction of the New National Curriculum, the children will also be involved in whole class cooking sessions. Both savoury and sweet recipes will be followed and class recipe books produced!
Following recent successful after school parent and child design making activities; this annual event aims to continue. In addition to this we also aim to continue to build upon the close working relationships with businesses such as INTEL to support our continuing thirst for more creative design challenges.
