The first days
If a child is tense or unhappy he/she will not be able to play or learn properly, so it is important for parents and Nursery staff to work together to help the child feel confident and secure in the group. This takes longer for some children than others and parents should not feel worried if their child takes a while to settle.
What to wear?
In order to feel free to explore and experiment with all kinds of materials, including messy ones, it is best to send children dressed in clothes which are easily washable or not too new. We also ask that your child is in sensible, hard-wearing school shoes that are easy for your child to take on and off themselves. We recommend Velcro or slip-on shoes and ask that you avoid laces.
It is good for children to practice skills which will make them independent. Simple clothing which they can handle themselves will enable them to go to the toilet when they want to and to put on and take off their outdoor clothes without being too dependent upon other people’s help.
Nursery School has spare clothes available in case of accidents but you may like to provide a spare set of clothes in your child’s bag if you feel that this will make your child feel more comfortable.
